Crooked squat help continued... Once chatting with and evaluating this athlete, it became apparent that there were a few reasons he is crooked: * History of L hip flexor pain * Decreased ankle mobility on L * Habit aka neuromuscular pattern that he has reinforced for quite a while now Where we started- opening up hip internal rotation & nerve floss for lower leg to address ankle stiffness. (Pictures; videos can be found on Spectrum Performance YouTube channel) Then, movement in the new range to reinforce the pattern. Tempo (3 second count down) always makes it more challenging! They are on the same continuum, different amount of load and complexity 💪 #spectrumperformance #getpt1st #crossfit #usaw #uspa #ussf #backpain #shoulderpain #footpain #wellness #postpartum #physio #momswholift #diastasis #Repost @dr.caleb.burgess (@get_repost) ・・・ 💥Rehab vs Training💥 - 📌 There seems to be this irrational idea that you need to think completely differently about rehab vs training when working to improve a specific task, job, or sport - 🧠 Yes, with rehab there may be more to think about regarding tissue sensitivity, healing times, pain, fear of movement, etc, but the CORE PRINCIPLES of rehab and training are the SAME: - 🏋🏻 Push the body at a level that induces it to build more STRENGTH and RESILIENCY (through progressive overload), and do so in a way that is SPECIFIC to the goal that you intend to achieve - 💯 The difference is the STARTING POINT - 💥 In rehab, you are usually starting at a much LOWER level of load capacity, so things like lifting your arm to grab a cup out of the cabinet may be too difficult or painful. Therefore, since your activity tolerance is lower, we need to be smart about prescribing exercises that increase your ability to perform a given task (OVERLOAD) without pushing too far too fast ("PROGRESSIVE" and gradual is KEY), all while making them SPECIFIC to the task at hand - 💥 In training for a sport, the load capacity and goals may be much HIGHER, but we will still follow the same PRINCIPLES to get you there: make the exercises SPECIFIC to your sport or exercise goal and make them challenging enough to stimulate higher level function (OVERLOAD), all while making sure not to "overdo" it ("PROGRESSIVE" and gradual) too quickly past your current strength or load tolerance - 💥 At the end of the day, both REHAB and TRAINING are speaking the same language. They just fall on different ends of a continuum - 💥REHAB = TRAINING💥 💥TRAINING = REHAB💥 - 💪🏼 Thank you to @strengthcoachtherapy for helping put this together. Shoulder pain when your arm is over your head- presses, snatches, putting on your shirt?! 😑 We tend to be weaker at end range positions rather than midrange. Interestingly, a lot of training, fitness and sports demand a lot from our end ranges. Get stronger at end range-- Try this: lay on your belly, forehead down. Extend arm to the side, play with different angles. Elbow stays straight, thumbs up. Now control the movement up and over a target x10 reps. Stretching and soft tissue work only scratch the surface of making lasting improvements 🤯 This dancer came in with the goal of improving hip mobility for ballet and splits. 💃 Sure stretching and soft tissue can have its place, but what makes the biggest difference? Spend time in the position you want to gain. She is performing end range hip flexion holds. Her goal is to sit up straight while she holds her foot as high as she is able for 10 second bouts. Rest isn't always the answer 🤯 I hear this often, "I'll just take off a few weeks then try to get back to _____". Insert running, squatting, pull ups, tennis, etc. What if rest isn't what you need? 🤷‍♀️ Many folks take off long periods of time then right when they get back to the activity, the pain is still there!! For an acute (just happened) injury, rest could very well be warranted. But for chronic (6 weeks or so +) pains rest doesn't cut it. For example-- The way we address something like chronic tendon irritation: progressive loading aka movement! There is a stepwise way to reload a painful area to keep you active and kick out that nagging pain. 💪 Also, I bet cleaning up movement patterns would knock that pain down too 😉 What is your nagging area of pain? There is no "one size fits all". We are all built differently! What if you could decrease pain and improve your numbers by tweaking your squat set up?! #usaw #uspa #ussf #backpain #hippain #squat #womenwholift #spectrumperformance #wellness #Repost @dr.nick.dpt (@get_repost) ・・・ [PEOPLE SQUAT DIFFERENTLY] --- Looking an normal anatomic variance, how can we possibly think that every human will squat exactly the same - I think it's good to know and understand some general guidelines when assessing the squat. Things I like to look at include weight distribution, hip hinge, bar path (if loaded squat), and general symmetry with the movement. However, the golden question is: is this variation normal (i.e anatomic), is it learned (motor control/strength/etc) can I improve it, and do I need to? That's a loaded question(s). One that I can't fully address in just an instagram post because as the saying goes "it depends." But it's a line of thinking that I would recommend we ask ourselves as movement professionals instead of dogmatically saying things like "knees can't go past toes/feet have to be shoulder width/butt wink will kill you" etc. I think we (and I for that matter) can do better. - 🌐 That said, in the picture you'll see a few different things. (Shout out to the man Ryan @themovementfix for the inspiration) The femur (thigh bone) has an articulation point with the acetabulum (hip socket). The head of the femur can vary widely anatomically, both in size and in angulation (such as femoral anteversion and retroversion) If someone has excessive anteversion of the femur, what squat stance would they likely be most comfortable with? -⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The depth of the socket is also important, as is the direction the socket is facing. Observe the depth difference in the left vs right. Which one do you think is better for a narrow stance squat? The femoral neck angle may also change throughout life, and varies widely with gender and ethnicity. -⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🔑Take home message: Humans move differently. Healthy & Happy Shoulders 💪 The half kneeling windmill is helpful in so many ways! Here we are using it to challenge her shoulder stability while involving her torso and hips. This is also great for introducing bending & twisting of the midline, which we tend to skip in "usual training". To get all the way down with the chest remaining open, you will also need some flexibility! Might look simple, but it's not easy! Try it out first with no weight. A great way to improve shoulder health is to be sure to address both horizontal and vertical push & pull movements. This athlete trains 3 of those planes of movement but completely misses the horizontal pulling. Hip, knee and/or foot pain with running? 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️ Single leg control is a must for folks who are looking to run- whether in a WOD, during a triathlon or returning to running postpartum. The hip clock is meant to challenge the whole chain from deep hip musculature to the little muscles in your feet. The goal is to keep the stance leg controlled with knees tracking over toes rather than being pulled in by the band on the other foot! Simply tap the toes of the moving foot rather than shifting weight through that side. Looks simple, but it's a hard one. Differentiating scapular retraction (shoulder blades back) from lumbar extension (arching low back) can be challenging for athletes using barbells and dumbbells 🏋️‍♀️ This drill reinforces maintainging lumbar tension while performing a bent row for retraction. Touching your toes, putting on pants or shoes, bending to pick up something can all be very challenging and painful when your back hurts. Sure we all have #gymgoals but if we can't function in daily life, not many gym goals are being chased! The unweighted Jefferson Curl is a great option for folks with back pain who are working long hours in a static position- seated or standing. Motion is lotion, so they say. Rolling down may provide a passive stretch and opening of areas that are achy. This can help decrease pain quickly! Give it a try. 4-6 slow rep, curling/rolling down and back up. Back pain & weightlifting -- Bird dog hold: actively pushing foot into the wall. Arm reaching overhead, add a small weight if able. The goal, creating tension throughout the whole chain and holding while maintaining back position.
